Smartphones You Can Buy That Are Water Resistant

Smartphones You Can Buy That Are Water Resistant

One trend we’ve seen growing in the smartphone market is water resistance. As users take their handsets with them almost everywhere they go, it’s great to know that they can live through an accidental dunk in the pool. Here are our picks for the best water resistant Android phones that you can buy as of September 2017.
First, a quick explanation of how the market determines a phone’s water and dust resistant level. These come in the form that look likes “IP68.” The “IP” stands for Ingres Protection, a standard created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The first number, in this case, ‘6’, means the level of dust resistance. Most smartphones have this level, and it stands for “No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight).”
The second numerical number represents the water resistance. In many cases, we’ll see smartphones tout either a ‘7’ or ‘8’ rating. The ‘7’ rating is set as “Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1m of submersion).” The ‘8’ ranking bumps that up to 1.5m of submersion for up to 30 minutes.
One last thing to remember is that these phones are marketed as water resistant, not waterproof. Although both the OEMs and carriers will advertise the use of these devices underwater, if any water damage does take place, you will be held liable, and your warranty will most like be voided.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8
The Galaxy Note 8 is at the top of our list because it’s the newest and most premium, but it’s also the most expensive smartphone. Samsung has been a leader in getting its flagship phones high IP ratings so that its customers can use the devices almost anywhere they go. Samsung continues this trend by making the Note 8 IP68.
What really sets the Note 8 apart from the crowd is its built-in stylus called the S Pen. With it, users can take handwritten notes, capture specific sections of their displays, and navigate around the interface without having to use their fingers.
This is also the first flagship from Samsung to feature dual rear-facing cameras. Samsung uses the secondary telephoto lens to create depth and background blur (bokeh) effects. This works in conjunction with the Snapdragon 835 CPU, 6GB of RAM, and 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display.
You can purchase the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 from the following outlets starting around $930:
Amazon
Samsung
Best Buy
Verizon
AT&T
T-Mobile
Sprint
LG G6
The LG G6 also comes with an IP68 water and dust resistant rating. The best part about this phone is that its price has dropped to the point that it’s half of the cost of the Note 8.
Unlike last year’s LG G5, the G6 drops the company’s attempt at modularity and comes swinging with a “bezel-less” display called FullVision and a premium looking all-glass design.
Besides that, the G6 is pretty much identical predecessors; it features LG’s skinned version of Android, has dual rear-facing cameras with a 125-degree wide angle lens, and an appropriately placed fingerprint sensor located below the camera array. Its biggest drawback is the fact that it shipped with a slightly slower Qualcomm 821 processor.
You can purchase the LG G6 from the following outlets starting at around $450:
Amazon
LG
Best Buy
Verizon
AT&T
T-Mobile
Sprint
Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+
If the Galaxy Note 8 is either too big or too expensive, you might want to check out the
Galaxy S8 or S8+ . Both of these handsets have almost identical specs to Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone, but you will be missing out on the dual rear-facing camera setup and 2GB of less RAM.
Both of these handsets are also IP68 rated and will be able to handle taking photos and videos underwater.
You can purchase the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ from the following outlets starting at around $700:
Amazon
Samsung
Best Buy
Verizon
AT&T
T-Mobile
Sprint
LG V30
At the end of August, LG took the wraps off of its second flagship smartphone of the year: the
LG V30 . This device has everything that people loved about the G6 but included performance improvements, a 32-bit Quad DAC, high-sensitivity microphones, and a 16MP camera sensor featuring an f 1.6 aperture.
The LG V30 is unfortunately not available for purchase just yet, but when it is, it’ll feature an IP68 rating. As it will hopefully be available in the coming weeks, it has been added to this list. Links to purchase the handset will be added as soon as possible.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Active
As stated previously, Samsung has been a leader in smartphone water and dust resistance. One of its most “durable” and protected devices has been the Active line, made in conjunction with and for AT&T. This hasn’t changed this year as Samsung has released the S8 Active , featuring the exact same internals as the other two S8 variants.
The biggest difference with the Active is its build materials such as rubber bumpers which gives it a US Military Standard (MIL-STD) rating. This means that beyond being water and dust resistant, it can resist extreme weather and can take a beating.
The other big difference is that unlike the curved glass found on the S8 and S8+, the Active features an entirely flat display. This can be seen as a plus for those who dislike accidentally tapping on things when palm rejection doesn’t work.
You can purchase the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active from the following outlets starting at around $850:
Amazon
Samsung (AT&T)
Best Buy (AT&T)
AT&T
HTC U11
HTC has been shaking things up with its smartphone design this year. While in years past, the company has been known for making premium handsets made out of metal, it chose to start from the ground up and introduce phones with an all-glass backing with highly-reflective color schemes.
Just like almost every flagship released in 2017, the U11 features a Snapdragon 835, 4GB of RAM, and a top-of-the-line camera. Its main differentiating feature is its squeezable frame that acts as an input method for launching any of your applications or hardware functions.
Unlike the rest of the devices on this list, the
HTC U11 is only rated at IP67, but that should still be enough to protect it from the rain and taking a quick shot under the surface of your pool.
You can purchase the HTC U11 from the following outlets starting at around $650:
Amazon
HTC
Best Buy (Sprint)
Sprint
And if none of these handsets fit your fancy, you can always check out LifeProof’s collection of water and dust resistant cases . These cases do add a bit of bulk to your phone but are handy if you’re ever heading somewhere where your handset might get wet or dirty

The entrepreneur who made a crazy $16,000 smartphone now wants to build a $999 blockchain phone

The entrepreneur who made a crazy $16,000 smartphone now wants to build a $999 blockchain phone

The Finney devices would be able to share data, battery power, and computing power with other Finney devices.

Moshe Hogeg is the cofounder and CEO of Sirin Labs.  (Amir Cohen/Reuters)
The startup said on Tuesday that the $999 (£742) smartphone and the $799 (£593) PC will sit under a new device range called "Finney" and that they will be "secure open source consumer electronics for the blockchain era."

The founder and CEO of Sirin Labs is serial entrepreneur Moshe Hogeg — an eccentric Israeli who convinced Leondardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy to attend the launch of his first phone. In addition to Sirin Labs, Hogeg is also the founder of messaging app Yo!, photo-sharing startup Mobli, and venture capital firm Singulariteam, which has raised around $202 million (£150 million).

Hogeg told Business Insider ahead of the Finney announcement that the yet-to-be-built devices will be able to share data, battery power, and processing power with other Finney devices (sometimes a cable will be necessary).

But there's one condition: these resources can only be offered in exchange for the company's SRN cryptocurrency. "You share the value [of your resources] and get value in exchange," said Hogeg.

Sirin Labs needs to raise tens of millions of dollars to fund Finney's development. Hogeg plans to do this by issuing a new cryptocurrency and selling some of it to investors in exchange for legal tender or other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. "We need around $50 million (£37 million) to build the phone," Hogeg said. "If we get $75 million (£56 million) we can build the computer."

Assuming the money is raised for Finney, then the phone will take around nine months to develop, while the PC will take six months, Hogeg said.

The Finney devices will run on Sirin Labs' Shield OS, which would be designed to support a number of blockchain applications. The company writes on its website that Shield OS would be able to support a crypto wallet, encrypted communications, and a P2P resource sharing ecosystem for payment and apps.

Hogeg is exceptionally bullish when it comes to the blockchain to the extent that he told Business Insider on August 31 that he wants to invest in every Israeli blockchain startup there is. "I actually think it's underhyped," said Hogeg, who plans to invest anything from a few thousand dollars to a few million in local blockchain startups.

Sirin Labs is also willing to work with other phone manufacturers to promote the adoption of Finney, in the same way that Google has done with Android. The company will need another $25 million (£18 million) to fund the development of Shield OS for OEMS.

On the topic of Sirin's premium Solarin phone, Hogeg said: "The company has pivoted from luxury phones to mass market electronics. We released some of the man power we didn't need and hired new ones that are focused on blockchain.

"The company is going in a new direction. We still sell the line but we're not planning to keep developing the line. We're not going to invest more money."

Get A Better Whatsapp Experience With These 4 Hacks

Get A Better Whatsapp Experience With These 4 Hacks

The Whatsapp has already changed the means of communicating with each other. This app has become so successful that now people use it more than the SMS service provided by the mobile network. In the recent past year, the Whatsapp has become the top app for chat, sending and receiving files and now for voice and video chats too. All you have to do is to hold the tap on that particular number till it gets selected. Then click on the colon in the top right corner of the screen and tap the add chat shortcut option. It will create a shortcut on the home screen which can direct you directly to the conversation.

3. Star Messages:

Giving your messages the star status can make the use of Whatsapp much faster and effective. With this, you can save these messages in a separate folder which can be seen at any time. Moreover, by tapping on one of these star messages, you will be directed to the time of the conversation when you either received or sent that message.

4. Whatsapp Broadcast:

Creating the Whatsapp group where all your friends and families can chat and enjoy the moment has become a notion. But sometimes when you have to say something which is not appropriate to say in the group and you think that saying it to all individuals would be a better option, and then Whatsapp also allows you to do it with one of their features. The broadcast option in the Whatsapp which you can find by taping on the colon placed in the top right corner of the screen is a feature which can send a message to everyone in the group.

This open-source Android app is designed to detect credit card skimmers

This open-source Android app is designed to detect credit card skimmers

Protecting our data is a constant battle, especially as technology continues to advance. A recent trend that has popped up is the installation of credit card skimmers, especially at locations such as gas pumps. With a simple piece of hardware and 30 seconds to install it, a hacker can easily steal credit card numbers from a gas pump without anyone knowing. Now, an open-source app for Android is attempting to help users avoid these skimmers.
The CEO of SparkFun, Nate Seidle, partnered with programmer Nick Poole to develop “Skimmer Scanner.” This free, open-source Android app is built to detect credit card skimmers that are used most popularly in the area around your phone, specifically at a gas station.
Skimmers are commonly used at gas stations for a number of reasons, primarily because of how easy they are to install. Hackers only need their skimmer which costs about $10 and a master-key for the pump. Obtaining that key isn’t very hard either, as there are only a few variations that work for most pumps. Once installed, the skimmer does its work completely silently, and the hacker simply needs to return and connect over Bluetooth to grab the stolen card numbers.
Using your phone’s Bluetooth radio, Skimmer Scanner searches for a specific Bluetooth signal that is emitted by these skimmers, attempts to establish a connection, and then verifies if there is, in fact, a skimmer in the vicinity. It does this by using the default ID used by popular skimmers to search for them. What’s interesting is that, in a lot of cases, these skimmers aren’t secured or altered since the hackers will install them in “bulk.”
Skimmer Scanner is available now on Google Play, and you can also go check out the full blog post at  SparkFun’s website for more information. If you’ve ever run into this problem yourself or are simply interested in how this tech works, I highly recommend giving it a read.

Zuckerberg speaks on Facebook's role in maintaining election integrity

Zuckerberg speaks on Facebook's role in maintaining  election  integrity

On Thursday afternoon, Mark Zuckerberg went live on Facebook to discuss Facebook's role in maintaining election integrity. Zuckerberg, who had just returned to work from paternity leave, said that he hoped that Facebook would be a force for good democracy.

The company is currently working with the US Government regarding the Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Although they did not find much evidence of facebook being used by Russian groups in the beginning, they did uncover a lot later. He added that whatever evidence was found was handed over to congress. "We will continue our investigation into what happened on Facebook in this election. We may find more, and if we do, we will continue to work with the government. We are looking into foreign actors, including additional Russian groups and other former Soviet states, as well as organizations like the campaigns, to further our understanding of how they used our tools. These investigations will take some time, but we will continue our thorough review."

Facebook will also be making political advertising more transparent, in order to stop interference wherever possible. "We're going to bring Facebook to an even higher standard of transparency. Not only will you have to disclose which page paid for an ad, but we will also make it so you can visit an advertiser's page and see the ads they're currently running to any audience on Facebook. We will roll this out over the coming months, and we will work with others to create a new standard for transparency in online political ads," said Zuckerberg. Facebook will also strengthen the review process for these ads.

They also plan to increase investment in security and election integrity, and partner with election commissions across to the world and inform them of online risks in their elections. They are currently working with Germany on their upcoming elections this weekend. "In 2016, people had billions of interactions and open discussions on Facebook that may never have happened offline. Candidates had direct channels to communicate with tens of millions of citizens. Campaigns spent tens of millions organizing and advertising online to get their messages out further. And we organized "get out the vote" efforts that helped as many as 2 million people register to vote who might not have voted otherwise. Many of these dynamics were new in this election, or at much larger scale than ever before in history, and at much larger scale than the interference we've found," Mark reiterated.

But he admits that it is "a new challenge for internet communities to deal with nation states attempting to subvert elections" and stressed on Facebook's commitment to democracy.

How to Scan Documents Using Your Smartphone

How to Scan Documents Using Your Smartphone

Our smartphones have become very powerful gadgets, the computing power within them can achieve a lot if put to use in the right way. We have heard of scientists who “mine” computational power from smartphones all over the world to complete tasks but today, we’re going to be looking at one of the easiest ways to get more from your smartphone, such as scanning a document.

It’s not once I have seen someone take a picture of a document, maybe for safe keeping or to send it to someone, I have done this too and that’s how I came about Quick PDF Scanner and Cam Scanner. Most people preffer the latter from the former, they literally work the same way, but I like what I like and that’s Quick PDF Scanner and here’s how it works:

Once you fire up the application, you are met by a homescreen that will, by default, show you up to 5 previously scanned documents, that’s if you have been using the app like I have. There is a floating camera icon and that is what you should pay attention to.

Tapping it opens up a view finder that you will use to scan the document you want. The process is automatic, once you align the document to the grid lines, the lines turn from white to green and if a second or so, the image is captured and processed.

After processing, you can edit the image by changing how it looks, I recommend sticking to original or magic – if you scanned a black and white document. Next you can share the document, crop it and if you are up to it, you can use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature which recognizes the text in your document and allows you to edit, but keep in mind this doesn’t always work. If you are pleased with the document, you can go ahead and save it on your phone or share it, either as a PDF, .doc file or as an image. There’s even an option to send the scan directly to a printer.

So far, Quick PDF scanner has worked perfectly for me, in good lighting and with a well printed document, the scans come out looking great. The quality of the scan is very dependent on your phone’s camera, if your camera doesn’t take great photos, no amount of magic can make it scan a document well.

So why should you use an app to scan a document instead of just taking a picture? Well, like I mentioned, dedicated scanning apps offer better quality and they get rid of the background where you had placed your document, any more questions? There’s a comment section below.

Here’s a free business idea, if you have a great camera phone and are feeling entreprenuerial, why not start a scanning business, using your phone? Oh wait, you can’t actually start that scanning business because everyone with a smartphone knows about this now, or can you?

2017 N-Power Tax Interview Update

2017 N-Power Tax Interview Update

Please read this carefully.
The Federal Government of Nigeria entered into an Asset Finance Agreement with the Bank of Industry to provide devices. Certain vendors were preapproved by the Bank of Industry to provide those devices.
As at today, some vendors have delivered their devices but Brian and Speedstar are yet to be delivered.
Now for the devices that have been delivered, a team is currently pre-loading each device with over one million resources which includes videos, textbooks and so much more.
To move the process along, we have begun to deliver devices to beneficiaries (who selected devices before March, 2017) in Lagos and Abuja.
There has however, been a hold on delivering devices to N-Agro volunteers in Lagos and Abuja.

*Lagos, because they have not completed their training with the Ministry of Agric.

*Abuja, because a huge number of N-Agro beneficiaries did NOT turn up for the training. The ones who turned up will be contacted soon.
Those who received their devices in Lagos and Abuja would have noticed that they had to go to the MTN Service Centers to collect them.
But the pace was not very fast, so it was ramped up for Rivers State.
For those collecting devices in Rivers, we ask that you be orderly, don’t rush. It is NOT a first come, first serve basis. Each device has been marked with your name. NO ONE can give your device to anyone else.
We understand some scrupulous elements have been demanding money from you to get into the venue. DO NOT PAY ANYONE.
Shipping has begun to 7 other states asides from Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt. The states will be announced once the logistics have been fully addressed.
Please understand that this is a process. Everyone will get their devices. Be patient.

All parties are working assiduously to ensure that the devices get into your hands in the shortest time possible.

Remember this Device Delivery Update is for those who selected devices before March 27th, 2017.

2017 N-Power Tax Interview Update:
For N-Tax applicants that were called by NPOWER on phone, kindly proceed to check your E-mail. If you see a massage with the subject;
“Congratulations, you have been selected!”
The body of the Body will include
“Dear N-Tax applicant, Congratulations on your successful performance at
the telephone interview.”

Reasons why your smartphone gets hot

Reasons why your smartphone gets hot

Ever had that experience where your smartphone gets so hot you think it’ll explode? You are eventually left wondering if it’s a phone issue, a battery problem, or if it’s just a sign you need to get a new device. The truth is, there are certain things that can cause that and there are things that can be done to prevent your phone from steaming up.

Here are some of the major reasons your phone gets really hot and what you can do about; Out-Dated Operating System This is one of the major reasons why your Smartphone over heats so much, let’s assume you are running an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system in 2017; where we have phones running on a 7.1 Nougat operating systems and applications such as Snapchat, Whatsapp among others are issuing app updates all the time. With such extra features, you are likely to experience your device getting hot once in awhile when you run the application. You should also know that some apps have been developed or updated to run on the latest operating system.

Several Background Apps
Another major problem with devices in this time and age is we tend to install any app that is said to be a trending, in the process, we find our devices filled with several unused apps. From my interaction with people, I have come to understand or notice that out of all the number of apps we install on our phones, we only use a handful of these installed apps leaving the rest accumulating space and background data on the phone. Ever wondered why your device memory gets filled up and gets hot unusually? Well, most people do a quick restart and it helps to a point, but the best advice would be to delete/uninstall any unwanted app to save both space and increase processing speed.

MTN, TD Mobile, Google offer Nigerians affordable smartphone

4 Online Educational Platforms That Will Be Useful For  High School Kenyan Students

The key to life is education and knowledge and technology has made this challenge possible each and every day. For certain more people are now educated and information is not stuck in urban areas but also spreading to rural areas and places where getting an education seems almost impossible. However these e-learning platforms have made given teachers and students a better interacting system that has enabled many to have all the material they need online.
1 .Kytabu
As long as you have mobile money then you can access this application at an affordable price. They have local teachers and the necessary curriculum material on mobile devices and gives teachers an opportunity to create learning content around the required content. This allows students to enjoy learning and can have a better teacher-student relationship.
2. Eneza Education
The whole point of Eneza was to ensure that students in rural areas could also access an education. They have a dedicated group of teachers and affordable fee for whoever who may need it.
3. eLimu center
eLimu has digitized the Kenyan national curriculum content to deliver an affordable and engaging app to primary children in Kenya. The app is diversified in a way that it can focus on on digitally rich videos, animations, and games, the app promotes cognitive thinking skills, social consciousness, and IT literacy alongside academic learning.
4. Moringa School
It has been praised as Africa’s top coding school, Moringa School is a full-time, immersive coding school in Nairobi, Kenya. After a selective admission process, 12 students out of around 200 applicants are selected to undergo a four-month intense boot-camp training to become the next generation of ‘techies’.
Throughout this period, students go through an accelerator programme to improve their technical skills, learning different programming languages such as Javascript, HTML, CSS, Ruby on Rails, Android L or UI&UX Design. In addition, presentation skills and business fundamentals are additional modules to ensure that the learners are well-equipped upon ‘graduation’ from the school. Since its creation in 2014, 100 students have already graduated and, among those, 59 per cent have reported a salary increase after the code course, averaging USD$23,000 annually.

Nokia 9 leaks, has bezel-less curved AMOLED display and dual Carl Zeiss camera

Nokia 9 leaks, has bezel-less curved AMOLED display and dual Carl Zeiss camera

Nokia made a return with HMD, they initially released some mid-range smartphones, Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. The company recently dipped its toes into the flagship realm with the Nokia 8. The 8 might find a tough time competing with  other flagship phones which pack modern full screen displays and waterproof bodies. Well it seems things will change with the introduction of the upcoming Nokia 9 according to the new rumor.
It has been said that the Nokia 9 will have edge to edge, bezel-less display thanks to a curved AMOLED screen. The back is curved as well to make a seamless and ergonomic design. The rear shows a shiny copper-gold reflection which means it might be made of glass.
Nokia 9 Renders Leaked with 3D Glass & Rear-Facing Fingerprint scanner
On the back you get a dual camera, but since this is a Nokia flagship, the premium Carl Zeiss lens have been utilized. Chances are that one camera will be a monochrome like they did on the Nokia 8, but we will inform you once everything is confirmed. The screen details are inconsistent as well, some expect a 5.3 inch while others put it at 5.5 inches.
The processor is definitely going to be the Snapdragon 835 since its successor is yet to get into the market. Water and dust resistance will be supported this time round. Finally, the price has been said to be 750 euros which is significantly cheaper than the new iPhone X, LG V30 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, so that might work in Nokia’s favor.

NASA is about to find out if a supercomputer can survive a year in space

NASA is about to find out if a supercomputer can survive a year in space

   
On Monday, at 12:31 p.m. Eastern time, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off on a resupply flight for the International Space Station, and among its cargo, in addition to ice cream, was something else very cool: a supercomputer.
The machine, made by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and called the Spaceborne Computer, is capable of a teraflop worth of computing power, which puts it roughly in line with a late-1990s supercomputer. Made up of two pizza box-shaped machines in a single enclosure, the HPE supercomputer is a part of a year-long experiment to see how an off-the-shelf computer system can fare in space if protected in the right way by software.
Long space missions like a trip to Mars come with considerable communications delays, so equipping astronauts with a powerful supercomputer would allow them to solve complex problems without having to wait for the issue and the solution to be transmitted to and from Earth. But radiation on a trip like that can damage computers, so NASA and HPE are
conducting this research to see if software can provide the necessary protection to keep things functioning correctly.
Just like NASA’s famous identical twin experiment—in which Scott Kelly spent a year in space and his brother, Mark Kelly, stayed down on Earth—the supercomputer in space has a brother on this planet, a doppleganger machine located in Wisconsin acting as a control in this experiment.
HPE’s approach with the Spaceborne Computer, a two-node, water-cooled machine, is different from the way a mission-critical computer in space is physically protected (or “hardened,” in space gear speak) from radiation. For example, the chief computer for the Juno spacecraft inhabits a “protective titanium vault with walls about one centimeter thick,” according to BAE systems, which made that processor. Instead of physical protection for the HPE computer, the company is hoping to learn if software can do something similar.
Eng Lim Goh, the HPE project’s principal investigator, says that the “dramatic vision” for the future of this line of research is one in which before an astronaut travels to space, he or she would be able to take a top-of-the-line, off-the-shelf machine with them, and software could make it space-worthy. Then the astronaut could put whatever programs she wanted on the machine, a process that Goh, a computer scientist, compares to having an iPhone in space onto which you’ve preloaded your apps.
So how might this computer's software help protect it?
In general, Goh says that smart machines on Earth that exercise “self-care” may turn themselves off in the face of dangerous conditions. Another idea is that a machine can intentionally run slowly so that it can handle errors as it goes, as opposed to running at maximum capacity and not having the bandwidth to also cope with problems.
“We will find out what works, what doesn’t,” Goh says. “We have a whole list.”
HPE said in a statement describing the project that the “system software will manage real time throttling of the computer systems based on current conditions and can mitigate environmentally induced errors.” (If you’re wondering what Hewlett Packard Enterprise is, it’s one-half of the old HP, which divided in 2015; the other half is now HP, Inc., which makes personal computers and printers.)
“This system is not planned to replace the [physically] hardened systems,” Goh says. The intention is that something like this could function as a “decision support” tool on a long mission to a place like Mars, and not a primary mission computer.
It’s due to arrive at the space station in the Dragon Spacecraft on Wednesday.
This article has been updated to correct errors with the spelling of Eng Lim Goh's name. SpaceX's most recent launch lifted over 6,000 pounds of stuff destined for the ISS, including a supercomputer.

Lilium raises $90M Series B for all-electric flying taxi

Lilium raises $90M Series B for all-electric flying taxi

Imagine some time in the not-so-distant future. After making your way to the nearest community landing strip, you’ll pull out your phone, and, with a single tap, hail the nearest air taxi to take you to your chosen destination. The experience will have Uber-like convenience but the mode of transport couldn’t be any more different.
Never again will you need to ask your taxi driver to take the scenic route as you’re flown from one location to another, much faster than by car and with significantly less environmental impact. That’s the promise of the five-seater Lilium jet, a new kind of all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) device being developed by a startup based in Munich, Germany, which, until just a few years ago, had yet to come into existence.
“The founding mission of the company was to enable everyone to use this kind of transportation system in their everyday lives,” Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand tells TechCrunch. “We want to be the leading company enabling every person to take a jet instead of using the car and be five times faster to their destination… There’s going to be an app and from day one you’ll be able to book this airplane as a service”.
Despite what you may have read elsewhere, however, day one is still “several years” off, with Wiegand describing the Lilium jet as following a classic development timeline for any new aircraft of its size. That’s not to say that the startup hasn’t made significant headway to date, including a first public and successful flight in April for a two-seater and remote operated version of the jet, which, says the Lilium CEO, didn’t go unnoticed by investors.
Today the company is announcing it has closed $90 million in Series B funding, up from the $10 million Series A Lilium raised a year ago. Backing the round are Tencent ; LGT, the international private banking and asset management group; Atomico , Lilium’s Series A backer founded by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström; and Obvious Ventures, the early-stage VC fund co-founded by Twitter’s Ev Williams.
“When we had the Series A investment, we had an idea and a smart founding team and a promise, basically. In April we delivered that: we have shown a full-scale airplane flying, even in transition from hover flight, so we could really demonstrate this is the best technology in that field and it works. That was probably the key difference”.
In addition to a successful test flight, Wiegand says Lilium has “built up a lot on the company side,” in terms of hiring and processes and growing the engineering team. Headcount now stands at more than 75 people, around half of which are non-German. And just last month, Lilium added a number of key hires from notable companies in the transportation space, including Dr. Remo Gerber, former MD for Western Europe at Gett, who joined as chief commercial officer. “It’s a totally different company than it was one year before,” Wiegand says.
Neither a conventional airplane nor helicopter — but, to some extent, capable of doing the job of both — there are a number of other startups that are focused on the electric aircraft market, including Kitty Hawk and
Zee.aero , both backed by Larry Page; and
Vahana , backed by Airbus.
The Lilium jet’s party trick is that multiple engine flaps tilt from a vertical into a horizontal position depending on the jet’s flight mode. During take-off, the flaps are tilted vertical to enable the engines to lift the aircraft, but, once airborne, the flaps transition slowly into a horizontal position to enable the aircraft to accelerate until enough lift is provided by the wings alone, just like a conventional airplane.
However, it is the insistence that the Lilium VTOL jet should be solely electric-powered that really stands out and has left some aviation experts sceptical that the startup can reach its goal of speeds up to 300 kph and a distance of 300 km. Wiegand sounds unfazed.
“The biggest challenge is with batteries… Compared to gasoline, there is roughly one hundred times less energy per kilogram of batteries than there is per kilogram of gasoline, and that means you have to have an aircraft concept that is extremely efficient in the way it deals with the energy and is extremely efficient in moving forward in the air. There we have been extremely successful, specifically inventing a new aircraft concept that hasn’t been done before,” he explains.
Asked to elaborate a little, Wiegand says there are many differences in the details, such as using electric jet engines not open propellers. “Electric jet engines give a better compromise between safety, efficiency, noise and performance,” he explains. “There are also other things like the aircraft concept itself. If you look closely at the aircraft you’ll see there is no tail, because the tail adds drag and adds weight to an aircraft. We’ve done optimizations in almost every field, from aerodynamics, to lightweight design, to the propulsion concept”.
Of course, beyond the specific technical challenges posed by an all-electric VTOL, an air taxi service on the scale that Lilium envisions will require considerable buy-in from legislators and the wider public. Won’t things like noise pollution and skyline pollution be an issue if we are to see an entirely new flight-based transportation system become a reality? Not so, reckons the Lilium founder.
“Of course we thought of potential downsides from day one, that’s why we have invested a tremendous amount of energy and money to reduce the noise of these electric engines to the lowest possible degree. We’ve been hugely successful in that,” he explains. “The aircraft is around four times less noisy than a helicopter and you can only hear it when it is taking off and landing. Once the aircraft is in flight at a one kilometre altitude, for example, you can’t hear it from the ground. And that’s a huge benefit”.

In terms of visibility, Wiegand says that, for the most part, you probably won’t notice the presence of Lilium jets because they will fly at quite high altitude. “It’s a small tiny dot but you can’t completely vanish it,” he says. Unlike cars, you won’t ever see hundreds of Lilium jets in one spot, either. And at five times faster, less are needed “to do the same transportation job as cars”.
“You can’t hear it when it’s flying, you don’t need to build any infrastructure that cuts through nature, and it doesn’t create any emissions [fine dust or CO2],” says Wiegand, claiming that the Lilium jet can potentially become the means of transportation that creates the smallest impact on the environment possible.
But perhaps the greatest upside is the impact an air taxi service like Lilium could have on productivity and therefore the economy. “It’s not only a benefit in terms of relieving society from transit traffic, but the much, much bigger benefit would be that everyone can use it and that people can get to their destination five times quicker, basically a five times increase of their daily radius of life. This connectivity is going to be a huge benefit to society but also economic growth,” he says.
All of which makes it even more curious that Lilium’s founding story paints Wiegand as an almost accidental entrepreneur, first conceiving of Lilium all the way back in November 2013, two years before recruiting his co-founders Sebastian Born, Matthias Meiner and Patrick Nathen.
Recalls the Lilium CEO: “I was alone when I had the idea that this would be the perfect means of transportation. It was more a fun project for me to make some calculations and concept estimations and to see whether it’s physically possible. And a friend of mine said, ‘we can do this, you have to do this, it’s just too amazing’. We had drunk maybe a little bit too much beer, but actually the idea that he had sparked to found a company that builds a new kind of transportation system, it didn’t go away, so I decided to go back to Germany and assemble a founding team and set up a company that builds these aircrafts”.
On the topic of Lilium’s Munich-based HQ, Wiegand says the jet’s ‘made in Germany’ engineering has been “a very good friend that is well-known,” not least in the eyes of investors. “I think people knew that for hardware there is no better place to do it,” he says, noting that Southern Germany is home to world-class and hugely successful engineering companies such as BMW, Siemens, Audi, and Porsche. If all goes to plan, perhaps one day Lilium can be added to that list.

Donald Trump, US President's iPhone only has one app

Donald Trump, US President's iPhone only has one app

The conservative Trump does not have his phone configured like other iPhone users.

US President Donald Trump, according to Axios only uses one app on his newly got iPhone, which comes as no surprise to be Twitter.
The President who has become synonymous to Twitter is known for his rather bold and controversial tweets.

CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has said the president tweeting is actually a good thing contrary to popular opinion, because it makes him accountable that way.

The president also not have any browser on his phone, does not use a laptop, but rather depends on aides like Stephen K. Bannon, his former chief strategist, to hand-deliver printouts of articles from conservative media outlets.

Mr Trump according to White House officials recently switched from using a Samsung Galaxy S3 to using his iPhone.

Trump's iPhone could be configured remotely by a White House staffer through software called MDM, Apple blogger and podcaster John Gruber wrote on Sunday.

Aside from Trump's lack of familiarity with computers, the most likely reason for the restriction is security — the president's phone is a target for hackers around the world, so it needs to be completely locked-down to make it harder to hack.
